Commemorative coin is built on city's success

A cityscape of present-day Omaha adorns a commemorative coin that will be offered for sale this weekend.

Larger than a half-dollar coin, the official birthday souvenir was commissioned by First National Bank and the City of Omaha.

One side of Omaha's commemorative coin, top, features the downtown skyline, and the other sports the city's official "150!" logo.

In designing the coin, planners asked, "What can you put on a coin that represents the here and now?" said Nick Baxter, a senior vice president at First National Bank.

That made the cityscape a natural choice. Years from now, owners of the coin will have a reminder of the city in 2004.

The 11/2-inch coin is silver, with some gold plating.

One side features the First National Tower, the Woodmen Tower and other downtown buildings, with the words, "Umonhon: The Upstream People - Omaha Indian Language." Below the cityscape is the engraving, "Founded: July 4, 1854."

The other side features the 150! logo with the words: "A Year-Long Celebration Saluting Omaha's Past, Present & Future!" at the top and "1854-2004" at the bottom.

The $35 keepsake will be sold at souvenir booths at this weekend's festivities and at area historical societies.

A few thousand have been produced, and Baxter said more could be made if there is enough demand.
