NCLB (No Child Left Behind) requirements state "that every student is
technologically literate by the time the student finishes the eighth grade,"
and "that technology will be fully integrated into the curricula and
instruction of the schools by December 31, 2006." At Holy Name School,
it has always been our focus to integrate technology into the curriculum
and, thereby, enhance all classroom instruction. We strive to infuse
technology (computers, digital media, interactive media, etc.) and the
possibilities it offers into the school day.
During the 08-09 school year, the students will begin
using IPods and green screen capabilities to share video and audio work. (Thanks
to Best Buy for the equipment.) Students will record informational podcasts
and vidcasts in a
variety of subject areas.
May 07 welcomed the addition of 2 new Little Tikes
Explorer learning centers in the preschool classrooms. The students
now have a computer dedicated to preschool learning software. They
even have their own Little Tikes computer desks complete with Explorer
keyboards and mice just the right size for little hands.
New
during the 06-07 school year were Smart Boards for every classroom.
Every teacher has an interactive white board in their classroom.
Using this tool enables the teachers to preview Internet websites with
their class. They are able to show PowerPoint slideshows
developed to enhance curriculum areas.
Grants from Best Buy and the Nebraska Educational Technology
Association have provided Holy Name with GPS (Global Positioning System)
software and hardware. Using this equipment, the students will
experience the world in terms of latitude and longitude. The GPS
devices also calculate area, distance, time and phases of the moon.
A Weed and Seed grant purchased Lego Robotics kits.
These kits allow the students to program robots they build using computer
software and beam those programs to the robots using infrared technology.
A grant from Best Buy purchased a multi-media computer station complete
with DVD player and sound recording. Coupled with a Mac computer
system and musical keyboard, we now have the ability to create videos (DVD
and VHS) with student created music. What a great addition to our
technology department!
Another grant from the Beaumont Foundation consists of a 15 laptop
computer workstations, 3 digital cameras, laser printer and document
projector. This wireless cart will be used with our "Reminiscence
Project." This project pairs an 8th grader with a senior member of the
community to share memories. When not is use with the Reminiscence
Project, the laptops will be available to any classroom wishing to work on
the laptops/Internet in their classrooms.
All grades participate
in the I-Safe program
where they learn safety tips and rules for Email and Internet.
