Mr. Charles Ahovissi from Benin West Africa
will join us for 6 weeks in the spring to teach us about the culture, music and dance from his country.  This residency is sponsored through the Nebraska Arts Council and funded in part through a grant from Target.

Focus for World Languages for
2010-2011 began with the parish
Ethnic Festival on October 17th.

 

The students focused on 10 different countries and designed presentations for those countries.

Curriculum the remaining school year will focus on the languages and cultures of the 10 countries.

We will also continue our partnership with
Indian Ocean Primary in Tanzania.

 

Speakers 09-10

Africa: 

Sondra McSwain from the Nebraska Arts Council taught African Dance to our students.  Funding provided by a grant from The Zucker Fund.

Vietnam: 

Fr. Baumert:  Shared trip experiences

Colonel Tony Mai: born in Vietnam and currently serving in Iraq.

Chinese: 

Chinese Acrobats

 

Following the requirement for Foreign Language education in Elementary Schools*, Holy Name expanded our Spanish curriculum to World Languages during the school year 06-07.  Highlights of this exciting program are:

· All classes and will be exposed to international themes during regular classes through integration in current curricular areas.

· K-3 will experience World Language once a month in technology.

· 4-8 will experience World Language classes once a week in technology.

· Speakers will present to classes throughout the year from a variety of different cultural and language backgrounds.

· Art, Music, Library and Physical Education will include an international component.

· Languages for year 06-07 were Spanish, Japanese and Hebrew.

· Languages for year 07-08 were Spanish, French and a unit on language adapted to special needs (Braille, sign language.)

· Languages for year 08-09 were Spanish, Hindi and Italian.

· Languages for 09-10 were Vietnamese, African and Chinese.

 

*Below is the Rule 10 requirement for World Language in Elementary Schools approved by the Nebraska State Board of Education and under review by the Attorney General:

004.02B  World Languages.  By the 2007-08 school year, the curriculum includes introductory experiences in world languages.  This may include integrating international themes in other subject areas; the use of school, community, and international resources; and/or specific instruction in other languages.
