7th Grade Classroom

Mr. Christopher Start

Email: Mr. Start

Welcome to the Seventh grade homepage at Holy Name School.  Junior High (grades Seven and Eight) is an exciting and challenging time.  The curricula (math, science, and religion are discussed here) are designed to provide students with a broad view of science, a comprehensive "tool set" for math, and continue to build on the faith they have received from the Church, family, friends, and previous teachers.

The science curricula for grades 6-8 cover a lot of territory!  We explore many of the significant divisions of natural science: biology, chemistry, physics, astronomy, geology, and several others.  Lab experiences,  activities, 'web-quests', simulations, projects, classroom discussions, research, and traditional classroom methods will all animate the various topics.

In mathematics we utilize the incremental approach through the Saxon math series.  Each new lesson introduces a small, new concept, building upon previous work.  Daily problem sets include significant amount of review problems.  Holy Name School works with each student to place them at the best level math to match their ability and skill set.  Most students will work in a traditional classroom setting at grade level with their peers.  Some students, who may need additional assistance, will study in a smaller setting with Sr. Carol OSM, one of our resource teachers.  Others students will work ahead in advanced settings.

The religion curriculum canvasses a broad range of topics.  The seventh grade class- which Mr. Start teachers- surveys the Old Testament, analyzes the Apostles Creed, meets Jesus in the Gospels, and applies all the lessons learned to our everyday situations through morality and ethics.  Daily prayer and weekly Mass, however, are the essential elements to not only Religion class, but our entire day at Holy Name School.

The far-reaching curricula at HNS are designed to prepare our students to the best of their abilities for high school and every-day life.  Learning to pray as a class provides a chance to grow as a faith community, built upon our shared belief in Christ Jesus and His Good News.
