Students can look forward to many wonderful projects and activities in the
fifth grade! The following is a list of subjects along with some of the
topics we will be covering:
Reading: This year we have a new reading series. There will
be a lot of great stories as well as take home work to help each student
with their comprehension and critical thinking skills. Students will also
spend class time reading some fantastic novels. They will read Maniac
Magee by Jerry Spinelli, Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine
Paterson, Freedom Train: The Story of Harriet Tubman by Dorothy
Sterling, and Number the Stars by Lois Lowry.
English and Spelling:
In addition to a comprehensive grammar and spelling curriculum, students
will do numerous creative and research-based writing activities. They will
also keep a daily journal of ‘free writing’ and new vocabulary words. Kids
will learn to improve their writing by using the Six Traits method.
Math:
Using the Saxon Math series, students will continue to master their math
facts. New material will continue to build on these facts along with
previous-learned concepts. This incremental approach will help kids improve
their problem-solving abilities. Students will cover numerous mathematical
topics, only some of which include estimating, multiplying by three digit
numbers, unit conversions, multiplication and division of fractions and
decimals, probability, and graphing. They will also take a timed test
before each lesson.
Social Studies:
This year students will study the United States and its Neighbors. They
will learn about American history from a geographical, social, and
multicultural perspective. Using this approach, they will be better able to
analyze historical events and to reflect upon their own place in a
democratic society. As they study, kids will learn to how organize
important information and improve note-taking skills. They will also
participate in many hands-on projects, the first of which will be about a
specific state or region in the U.S.
Writing:
A very familiar face is back this year to offer our students an extension
for their writing. Mrs. Owens will meet with the students four times a week
to further develop their writing skills in all different areas. The
students love this time and always show their wonderful creativity!
Religion:
Our religion book is
titled Walking by Faith. During the year we will explore Creation
and God’s revelation, the Holy Trinity, The Church as a sacrament, Christian
Morality and the Beatitudes, and the Sacraments. The students will also
participate in a mass planned by the fifth grade every few weeks.

another." Helen Keller
