Fourth grade has the
wonderful challenge of bridging primary to intermediate grades. We work on
gaining more independence while weaving in the Discipline with a Purpose
Skills. This is the year that we delve into leadership and completing a
task. These are two of the 5 skills that are focused on in fourth grade.
Communication, cooperation, and reasons for rules complete the list. While
these five skills are introduced in 4th grade many of the
children become of aware that they have already used these skills. The
children in 4th grade should have mastered listening, following
instructions, social skills, sharing, and asking questions by the end of
third grade. Fourth grade is the opportunity to tie what the children have
learned in the primary years with the beginning of the intermediate years.
Fourth grade children
thrive on getting the opportunity to make choices. They learn the
consequences for making choices, and then they are given the opportunity to
improve on their choices. This is the year we see amazing growth as the
children seem to mature before our very eyes. We know that everyone moves
at a different pace in their educational and emotional growth, therefore
several lessons are given to assist children in this growth.
The children are able to
participate in a variety of ways to learn. Lessons are presented in large
and small group settings and individually. The fourth grade students are
able to attend many field trips which support social studies, science and
language arts. We also attend assemblies at school that incorporate many of
our disciplines. Technology is often tied in with our lessons. We are
fortunate to have Smartboards in our classroom and have a wonderful
technology lab. Sometimes we bring the laptops into our classroom to
reinforce a skill.
As you can see fourth
grade is a year to not only continue academic development but also emotional
and social development as well. Please keep in mind that while we continue
our focus on academic, emotional and social development, we always know that
God is in the center of our education. Faith is a very integral part of our
daily environment.
Fourth grade is an amazing
grade. I might also add that Holy Name is fortunate to have amazing
children. Every year I am impressed with our precious students.
