Subject: [Douglas County ARES] Storm Spotter Training and Upcoming PR
Events
Just a reminder that the Douglas County ARES storm spotter training will be
held this Sunday at 1:30pm, American Red Cross - 82nd & Spring Street in
Omaha. Those hams planning on helping out with spotter activities this year
should attend this class. If you aren't able to make this Sunday's class
check out http://www.crh.noaa.gov/oax/news/spottersched.shtml
<http://www.crh.noaa.gov/oax/news/spottersched.shtml> to find a time and
location that might work out better for you. Remember that the Advanced
training will be held April 27th, 1:30pm, ARC - 82nd & Spring and you must
have already attended a basic class this year if you plan to join us on the
27th.
Also, Douglas County ARES and Aksarben ARC members will be setting up a
display at the Crossroads Mall this Saturday (March 15th). We will be
participating in the annual Public Safety day and will be showcasing the
emergency and disaster services aspect of amateur radio. This is a big
event with exhibits from local law enforcement, fire and rescue groups and
others. We have been given a prime location on the ground floor in the
center of the mall (in between the two escalators leading to the food
court), so we expect to have lots of visitors. We'll also have one of our
radio equipped vehicles parked inside, in front of our booth. We plan to
run HF, 2 meters/440, slow scan TV and APRS, with lots of handouts for
curious visitors, ham radio related coloring papers and of course the
venerable Archie comic books for the kids. So, if you're in the area we
invite you to stop by and check out our display!
We're also gearing up for another public display at the Strategic Air and
Space museum on Sunday April 6th. The display will be up during the
museum's annual Family Fun Day. We are working with the SACMARC club and in
addition to HF, 2 meters/440, slow scan TV and ARPS, an NSTAR amateur radio
balloon launch is scheduled. This will be another great opportunity to help
spread the good word about amateur radio throughout the community, reaching
both Omaha and Lincoln area residents.
And don't forget about the annual Douglas County siren test coming up the
day prior (April 5th). We're still looking for a few more volunteers for
this important public service. If you're going to be available and would
like to help out with this or any of the other events mentioned above please
send an email to w0nsa@arrl.net <mailto:w0nsa@arrl.net> and Linda will get
you set up.
Thanks & 73 - de,
