Content-Disposition: inline
Paul,
It was with interest that I received a routed copy of your
S.A.C.M.A.R.C. April-June Newsletter. I am one of two station managers at
the Collins Amateur Radio Club at the Rockwell-Collins facility in Cedar
Rapids. We also recently obtained the call W0CXX for our station-which was
the call of Arthur Collins, the founder of Collins Radio Company.
I think it is both a good and noble tribute to notorious hams to see
their personal calls used for club stations. I have a personal interest in
the military side of communications as I have worked on nearly every piece
of HF equipment which Collins has produced over the past 29 years. I was
the engineer in charge of a special refurb program where we refurbished a
number of 205J 50KW HF transmitters for the Air Force. Three of those were
re-installed at Offut for one of your primary transmitter sites. I suspect
they have since been removed from service since SCOPE COMMAND has probably
taken over the communications sites. I also worked on some 718U equipment
from the Speckled Trout aircraft on a number of occassions. I believe that
was probably General LeMay's aircraft if my memory serves me correctly.
Also, I have worked on the S-line equipment belonging to Barry Goldwater on
a few occassions. I thought you might be interested in that since you had
an article in your newsletter about him.
What do you guys/gals have for equipment at your two club stations?
We mostly use KWM-380s here although we do have an S-line and an ICOM HF at
one of the stations? I am also curious as to how much Collins HF equipment
is still in use at Offut? We don't hear much from the field unless we make
a trip to a base for some reason.
Again, I thought your newsletter was informative, professionally done,
and a tribute to your club. I enjoyed reading through the articles. The
newsletter was routed to all of our club officers.
73, Dick Webster K9ULW
